Newport News Shipbuilding’s IT Solutions Development team is seeking a well-rounded leader to join our team as a mid-level manager – someone with a unique blend of leadership and management experience, a strong business acumen, and a demonstrated ability to galvanize a team around a sense of shared purpose to deliver a superior product to our engineering and U.S. Navy customers. This manager will work with a team of software and systems engineers responsible for the analysis, design, and testing of software solutions to support our submarine and aircraft carrier builds.

Position Description:

Responsible for mid-level management of software and systems engineering resources and work products focused on Manufacturing software solutions. The manager must determine optimal application of those resources to solve business problems through project implementations and assignment to recurring support efforts. The manager oversees and ensures appropriate solution development for projects of moderate complexity and importance to the operation, strategic improvement, and efficiency of the business.

•Manager will report directly to an IT Software Engineering Manager 3 and will work closely with other IT managers to provide best fit of all resources to the most critical business priorities managing resources to priorities and negotiating resolution of resource conflicts to accomplish desired results.

•Responsible for software and systems engineering for internally based IT projects to understand customer requirements from both a business and technology perspective to enable indirect transformational business change. Must understand business problems and ensure that recommended solutions by team enable the organization to achieve goals and meet strategic and tactical intentions.

•Review all key deliverables performed by team members to ensure proper completion and adherence to compliance requirements as necessary. Help team members resolve issues effectively to keep projects on track.

•Accountable for departmental administrative leadership as assigned and complete progress reporting and socialization of key information to entire department through either leadership or community interactions.

•Accountable to ensure cost and schedule, produced by the team are within the project’s plan and deliverables are of high quality. Work with team members to identify issues early and provide mitigations to ensure projects stay on track. Act as an advisor to Managers, Directors and Vice President regarding project complexities and risks and the mitigation of issues. (Ensure team members are informed and leveraging documented standards, strategies, principles, policies, procedures and other enterprise architecture guidance—interpreting and resolving any ambiguity utilized for solution development.

•Determine and recommend adequate staffing competencies and levels required to meet commitments through resource planning and skills assessment/forecasting. Improve employee growth and performance through training and employee development plans.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Demonstrated the ability to successfully manage and direct the work of others.

•Experience with Systems Engineering and/or Software Engineering - with preference for knowledge of IT processes and NNS application systems throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

•Experience with IT business process areas and solutions related to .NET and SAP software.

•Experience with business management principles for a similar work scope (in IT, shipbuilding – submarine or carrier construction, DoD, manufacturing, planning and related fields); and

•Familiar with Agile Development.
